N2  - Anthropology, which means literally'the study of man', is not the monstrous, universal form of enquiry that its name implies; and Sir Edmund Leach discusses how and why it has come to be regarded as something other than a specialized branch of zoology. His main purpose, however, is to illustrate by example some of the distinctive characteristics of his own style of anthropology which has its roots in the'functionalism' of Malinowski and Firth, the'structuralism' of Lévi-Strauss, and the'structural-functionalism' of Radcliffe- Brown and Fortes.  Sir Edmund emphasizes that British social anthropology is a kind of micro-sociology. The interdependence of the major dimensions of social life-covered by such labels as'economics','politics','law' and'religion' can best be understood by close observation of the behaviour patterns of people who live in domestic groups, and in the ritual formalities of marriage.
