The November 2000 Colloqium, Dutch scholarship and the Malay world: a critical assessment, is the inaugural meeting of a series of scholarly colloquia focused on exploring the role of non-Southeast Asians in the construction of knowledge about the Malay World. Through the centuries of colonialism, an enormous body of information, analysis and interpretation was built up'scientifically', taht is according to the investigate modalities of European epistemology, and with the rise of print capitalism made available to a wider audience. This constructed knowledge has been naturalized within the Malay World and is seldom discussed, let alone re-examined and critiqued, despite the impact such knowledge continues to have on local history and ethnic categories.
