Specimina Philosophi Dioptrice et Meteora
RenDescartes' (1596-1650) Specimina Philosophiae was published by the Amsterdam Elzeviers in 1644. In the introduction the work, Descartes authorized it as a faithful Latin translation of Discourse on the Method, which was originally published in French in 1637. The Latin version, however, reached a much wider audience and remained an influential title until the 19th century. It contains the famous phrase'cogito ergo sum':'I think, therefore I am'. The Elzeviers were the first to publish the Latin editions of all of Descartes' works.
