'As part of the Secretary-General's programme for reform, which included proposals to improve the coherence of the work of the United Nations, it was decided that the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UCTAD) produce a joint report on the performance and short-term prospects of the world's economies and developments in the international economy. This is the third joint report. By providing an overview of current macroeconomic developments and issues, it is intended to serve as a common point of reference for related work on such matters by the different United Nations entities in the economic and social area.
